SpaceTech at the EPIC Meeting on New Space at the European Space Agency

On the 12th September 2019, the European Photonics Industry Consortium (EPIC) organised a series of lectures entitled “EPIC Meeting on New Space at European Space Agency” at ESA/ESTEC in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.

In this framework, Hanjo Schäfer, Project Manager at SpaceTech GmbH, and partner in the LEMON project, was invited to give a presentation about frequency references and atomic clocks. Within his lecture, entitled “From lidar to optical atomic clocks. Building blocks for optical frequency references in space”, H. Schäfer presented SpaceTech’s achievements within the LEMON project.

During the EPIC Meeting on New Space, a set of companies came together to cover some of the key priorities for the “New Space” road map. The purpose of the so called “New Space” trend, is to bring to the Space market mature or established technologies that either compete with or complement existing commercial space services in order to reduce the costs necessary for space developments. Among ESA’s priorities to be covered at the EPIC Meeting, there were “new solutions for miniaturized and low cost LIDAR (adapting solutions from automotive market)”.
